Kayaköy (The Sad Whispers of an Abandoned Civilization)
The Story
A short journey from Seydikemer towards Fethiye will bring you to a ghost town of hundreds of stone houses leaning against a hillside, cloaked in silence: Kayaköy. This is the once-bustling town formerly known as Levissi, inhabited by thousands of Anatolian Greeks until the 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey. Today, with its roofless houses, empty streets, and magnificent churches, it resists time as a poignant monument to a suddenly abandoned civilization. To walk in Kayaköy is to listen to the whispers of past lives echoing in the stone streets and to bear witness to one of the saddest pages of history.
What to See
- Stone Houses and Streets: Discover the hundreds of stone houses arranged on the hillside with incredible architecture, designed so that no house blocks the view or sun of another. As you wander through these houses with their missing roof tiles and doors, imagine the lives once lived here.
- Taksiyarhis Church (Upper Church): Located at the highest point of the village, this large church is the most impressive structure with both its architecture and its faded interior frescoes. The view of the entire village and the plain below from here is also breathtaking.
- Panayia Pirgiotissa Church (Lower Church): Closer to the entrance of the village, this church is notable for its bell tower and the mosaics in its courtyard.
- The Living Village: Kayaköy is not just about ruins. At the foot of the ancient town, a bohemian and vibrant village life continues today, filled with art galleries, boutique hotels, pancake houses, and restaurants famous for their "tandır kebabı" (pit-roasted lamb). The contrast between these two worlds makes Kayaköy unique.
