The Ancient City of Pinara

Hidden among the pine forests near the village of Minare in Seydikemer, the Ancient City of Pinara boasts a captivating atmosphere that takes its visitors on a journey back in time. Named after its round-shaped acropolis ("Pinale" means "round" in the Lycian language), this city played a significant historical role as one of the six major cities of the Lycian League. As you approach Pinara, the first thing that greets you is the sight of hundreds of rock-cut tombs carved into the face of a steep cliff, resembling a honeycomb. This monumental view is the city's most distinct and unforgettable feature.

Exploring Pinara is less like a museum visit and more like a nature hike where history and nature merge into one. The city is spread across two main areas: a lower and an upper acropolis. It is possible to see the richest variety of Lycian rock tombs here, from simple pigeonhole-style graves to grand monumental tombs with temple-like facades. Besides the tombs, the theatre nestled in the forest, the agora (marketplace), the bathhouse, and especially the Odeon, which was dedicated to music and poetry, all whisper of the once-vibrant social and cultural life of the city.

Pinara's greatest advantage is that it is not as crowded or heavily restored as other ancient cities. Here, you can wander almost entirely alone among millennia-old stones in the shade of olive trees and listen to the silence of history. Therefore, when visiting Pinara, don't forget to bring comfortable walking shoes, water, and your spirit of adventure; because this city promises much more than a standard tourist trip.
