Near Seydikemer: Patara Ancient City and Beach

As you travel from Seydikemer towards Kaş, the road leads you to one of Lycia's most important and largest port cities: Patara. This place holds a meaning far beyond being just an ancient settlement. It is a magical geography that was home to one of history's first democratic assemblies, the birthplace of St. Nicholas (known as Santa Claus), and opens to the sea with a massive 12-kilometer beach where the sunset is best viewed. Patara is a unique destination that offers its visitors both a journey into the depths of history and the chance to relax on one of the most beautiful beaches of the Mediterranean, all with a single ticket.

The Capital Under the Sands: Patara Ancient City

As you wander among the ruins of Patara, spread over a vast area, you can feel the splendour of this once-wealthy port city.

  • The Lycian League Assembly Building: Undoubtedly, the most important structure in Patara is the assembly building, which has been restored to its former glory. Representatives of the Lycian League, one of the first known democratic unions in history, gathered here, voted, and made common decisions. Standing inside this structure is like touching the roots of democracy.

  • The Ancient Theatre and Lighthouse: The magnificent theatre, excavated from under the sands, showcases Patara's artistic richness, while the ruins of one of the world's oldest known lighthouses, unearthed in a nearby excavation site, prove the city's importance as a port.

  • The Main Street and Triumphal Arch: The Roman-era Triumphal Arch (Arch of Mettius Modestus), symbolizing the grand entrance to the city, still stands. As you walk along the colonnaded street starting from here, you can imagine the ancient shops and baths. Fully exploring Patara requires at least 3-4 hours as it covers a large area, so taking water, a hat, and comfortable shoes will make your tour much more enjoyable.

  • The Endless Sand: Patara Beach

Reached by passing through the ancient city, Patara Beach is one of Turkey's most impressive natural beauties.

  • The 12-Kilometer Beach: With its fine, golden sand and a width that seems to stretch on forever, Patara is a paradise for those tired of crowds. No matter how busy it gets, you can always find a quiet corner for yourself.

  • Caretta Caretta Nesting Area: This magnificent beach is also one of the most important nesting areas for the endangered Caretta Caretta (Loggerhead) sea turtles. For this reason, the beach is closed to public access from the evening until morning during the summer nesting season. Please pay attention to the protected zones and respect this sensitive ecosystem.

  • The Sunset: The best way to end the day in Patara is to watch the sun go down over the sand dunes. The view of the setting sun, accompanied by the orange and pink hues of the sky, turns into a moment you will never forget.
