Çatak Neighborhood
About Neighborhood
Just 13 kilometres from the bustling centre of Seydikemer lies an oasis of pine-scented tranquillity nestled on a slope of the Taurus Mountains: the neighbourhood of Çatak. This is an authentic settlement at an altitude approaching 700 meters, where homes are intertwined with the forest and the landscape is defined by its terrain. Having separated from Kayacık in 2000 to forge its own identity, the community has maintained a stable population of around 400, preserving its deep-rooted and sincere neighbourly bonds.
Life in Çatak is a blend of nature's generosity and its challenges. Livelihoods are derived from the forest itself (forestry), its flowers (beekeeping), small yet precious fields scattered across the slopes, and livestock farming. Instead of industrial agriculture, the soil here is infused with the aroma of crops like anise, borlotti beans, olives, and thyme, cultivated through the hard work of local families. This production model reinforces the neighbourhood's self-sufficient and resilient character.
The most vital part of its cultural life is the "yayla" tradition. When the summer heat becomes intense, the people of Çatak migrate to cool high plateaus like Karakazıklar, Camialanı, and Söğüt, following a ritual inherited from their ancestors. This tradition not only strengthens community ties but also keeps their profound connection with nature alive. Despite its challenging roads and occasional water shortages, Çatak is a sanctuary waiting to be discovered by those seeking peace, authenticity, and a simple life in the heart of the forest.
