Çayan Neighborhood

About Neighborhood

Located on the northwestern border of Seydikemer, in a landscape that greets the neighbouring villages of Fethiye, lies Çayan, a neighbourhood that draws its name and character from the rushing stream known locally as "Deliçay" (the Wild Creek). This settlement, which gained its administrative independence from Paşalı in 1955, was formerly known as "Narlık." This ancient name is a living legacy, reflected in the pomegranate orchards that still grace its fertile slopes today.

Çayan's story has witnessed the shifting of administrative maps; it was first attached to Üzümlü, then to Kemer, before becoming part of modern-day Seydikemer. However, these changes have not severed the deep ties with its neighbours. The finest example is the Gevenalanı Yaylası, a summer highland pasture located within Paşalı's borders but used communally. This partnership is a symbol of a deep-rooted neighbourship and shared destiny that transcends modern boundaries.

At an altitude of approximately 275 meters, with its houses scattered across a slope, Çayan offers a peaceful life on the edge of the forest. In this neighbourhood of around 400 people, life flows according to the rhythm of the land. Alongside wheat, olives, and the pomegranate trees that gave it its former name, crops like sesame—a key part of traditional agriculture—and corn for livestock show how precious every inch of land is. Çayan is a place with a story, waiting to be discovered for both the wild spirit behind its name and the bounty of its soil.
