Çobanisa (Çobansa) Neighborhood

About Neighborhood

Reached by 56 kilometres of winding roads from the centre of Seydikemer, at an altitude of 1350 meters, lies a village that feels like a neighbour to the sky: Çobanisa. Known warmly by locals as "Çobansa", this settlement embodies the spirit of a shepherd, as its name suggests. It is home to an isolated yet resilient community near the peaks of the Taurus Mountains, where the air is always cool and fresh. Having split from the village of Çobanlar in 1952 to forge its own destiny, Çobanisa exhibits the character of a "clustered settlement," with its houses huddled together on a slope—an architectural reflection of a community united against the majesty of the mountains.

The heart of the economy beats to the rhythm of small-livestock farming and agriculture, both perfectly adapted to the challenging geography. Flocks of goats and sheep grazing on the hillsides are the most typical sight in the village. The fields yield hardy crops that thrive at this altitude, such as wheat, barley, chickpeas, and potatoes, along with anise, which is characteristic of the region. Life flows in a cycle between summers spent on the cool high plateau (yayla) of Düden and harsh winters spent in the village.

With a structure that sees its people migrate for work to coastal cities like Fethiye and Dalaman but receives no inward migration, Çobanisa presents an identity firmly attached to its roots. Fundamental challenges, such as drinking and irrigation water shortages, make the resilience of life here and the people's connection to their land even more profound. Çobansa is a sanctuary for those seeking an authentic mountain village experience and the pure breath of the Taurus Mountains, far from the complexities of the modern world.
