Çobanlar Neighborhood

About Neighborhood

Located just south of Seydikemer on the main Fethiye-Antalya highway, Çobanlar is a neighbourhood that draws its name and spirit directly from its deep-rooted Yörük (pastoralist nomad) heritage. This is not merely a geographical location, but the heart of a life cycle that unfolds in the fertile Eşen Plain during winter and on the cool highland pastures ("yaylas") in summer. The community's identity was virtually certified by a decision in 1952: the lowland area used as winter quarters retained the name Çobanlar, while the highland summer settlement was named Çobanisa, creating two separate yet intrinsically linked entities.

Life in Çobanlar flows at the intersection of the main road's dynamism and the tranquillity of the forest's edge. While the fertile soils of the Eşen Plain support agriculture, the true character of the neighbourhood is defined by animal husbandry and the Yörük culture. Its rural hamlets, such as Tekeler, Yörükler, and Köyiçi, carry the modern-day traces of this traditional lifestyle. Homes are spread out across spacious plots, creating a dispersed settlement pattern that allows each household to live in close connection with nature.

When summer arrives, the spirit of Çobanlar migrates to the peaks of the Taurus Mountains. The yaylas of Kayabaşı (Mından), Irzıvanlar, and of course, the sister settlement of Çobanisa, are not just grazing lands for animals; they are sacred spaces where a centuries-old culture, social bonds, and traditions are kept alive. Through this bi-seasonal way of life, Çobanlar forms a unique bridge between the modern world and its authentic Yörük identity.
