Çökek Neighborhood
About Neighborhood
Tucked away in the mountains northeast of Seydikemer is the neighbourhood of Çökek, a settlement that takes its name from the travellers of the past. According to legend, this location was a vital resting point on ancient migration routes where weary caravans would stop and make their camels kneel ("çöktürmek"). Although travellers seeking peace have replaced those caravans today, Çökek's spirit as a historic sanctuary remains alive. At an altitude of nearly 900 meters, it is a natural refuge to escape the oppressive summer heat and breathe in the clean mountain air.
Çökek's geography directly shapes its way of life. Houses and small agricultural plots scattered within the forest lands are a testament to a life lived in harmony with nature. Here, livelihoods depend on the gifts of the mountains: honey from the rich flora (beekeeping), livestock farming, and forestry form the economic backbone of the community. Alongside staple crops like wheat and barley, the fruits and vegetables grown by families for their own needs show that a life connected to the land endures.
In recent years, Çökek has been witnessing a new wave of migration. With shifting lifestyle preferences following the pandemic, many people seeking solitude in nature have turned to this area and begun constructing modern villas. While this new development contrasts with the village's historical fabric and its ancient "yayla" (highland pasture) traditions like those of Makmara and İğdirce, it also reveals Çökek's evolving identity, one that captures the spirit of the times. Despite challenges with water resources, Çökek is a high-altitude mosaic of life, carrying the traces of the past while looking hopefully towards the future.
