Karaköy
About Neighborhood
At the southern edge of Seydikemer lies a special place where history and agriculture meet on the banks of the Esen River: Karaköy. The most striking feature of this neighbourhood is the view from a window or a walk down the street: the timeless ruins of the ancient city of Xanthos, the magnificent capital of Lycia, standing right across the river. To live in Karaköy is to be a neighbour to a UNESCO World Heritage Site, separated only by a river and yet within walking distance.
Established on fertile alluvial soil at a low altitude of 35 meters, Karaköy's modern identity is shaped by greenhouse farming. The modern greenhouses spread across the neighbourhood's slopes showcase the region's agricultural potential, creating an incredible contrast with the ancient theatre and rock-cut tombs directly opposite them. Here, the Esen River is not just a source of water but also a natural boundary separating Seydikemer (Muğla Province) from Kaş (Antalya Province). However, this administrative border has become culturally permeable due to migration from the Kaş area, reinforcing the region's shared history.
Karaköy offers its residents a unique daily life where the rhythm of modern agriculture intertwines with the silence of an ancient civilization. It is the name of the bridge between two banks, where abundance sprouts from the soil on one side, and the whispers of history can be heard on the other.
