Ortaköy
About Neighborhood
Located north of Seydikemer, at the meeting point of the forest's edge and fertile agricultural lands, Ortaköy carries a profound historical identity that transcends its name. The neighbourhood's former name, Bayat, is that of one of the 24 Oghuz tribes that played a pivotal role in the Turkification of Anatolia. This heritage is a silent testament to the village's ancient roots. Its current name, "Ortaköy" (literally "middle village"), perfectly describes its position as a central point, both geographically between Fethiye and Seydikemer, and topographically between the forest and the plain.
In Ortaköy, sprawling across a wide plain at an average altitude of 190 meters, life flows according to the rhythm of the soil. Traditional Mediterranean crops such as cotton, corn, sesame, and olives, alongside fodder crops grown for livestock, demonstrate how efficiently the land is utilized. Dairy farming, conducted in barns, forms the primary livelihood along with agriculture. However, Ortaköy's connection to the modern world is strong; some of its residents work in tourism facilities, the construction sector, or trout farms in and around Fethiye, blending a traditional economy with contemporary opportunities.
During the summer, the people of Ortaköy continue the highland pasture ("yayla") culture inherited from their Oghuz ancestry by moving to the plateaus of Karabel and Urluca. They lead a tranquil life in harmony with nature. With its historical depth, productive lands, and integration into the regional economy, Ortaköy is a living hub that blends the heritage of the past with the dynamism of the present.
