Sarıyer
About Neighborhood
As you leave the centre of Seydikemer and head towards Antalya, just as the plain gives way to a climbing road, you know you've arrived in Sarıyer when you see the first houses scattered among the pine trees. Despite being only 6.5 kilometres from the town centre, its dispersed structure, fully integrated with the forest, opens a door to a completely different and tranquil world. It's a place with a unique character, combining the dynamism of the main road with the serenity of the forest.
Sarıyer's most sincere way of saying "welcome" is with the rising smoke and delicious aromas along the roadside. Freshly roasted or boiled corn and hot gözleme (savoury Turkish flatbreads), rolled out and cooked on the spot on a traditional sac griddle, create a classic resting spot for travellers. These small flavour stops not only breathe life into the local economy but also reflect the hospitable spirit of Sarıyer in the most delicious way.
Beyond this roadside vibrancy lies a quiet life hidden within the forest. Livelihoods depend on traditional agriculture, beekeeping, and animal husbandry, all practised on small, fragmented plots of land within the woods. Grains like wheat and barley, along with olives, are the primary sources of income for the families here. Those who migrate to the highland pastures (yaylas) of Sarıceviz and Örtülü keep the traditions of their ancestors alive. Although it experiences some outward migration due to the pull of the nearby town centre and faces challenges like occasional drinking water shortages, Sarıyer is a special neighbourhood that successfully preserves its authenticity in the heart of the forest and its warm smile on the side of the road.
